Gardening is an enjoyable activity for adults but it’s often a bit of a mystery to the kids. While they may see grownups busily going about their business with a trowel in hand, or covered in soil when re-entering the home, what exactly is going on remains unclear to them. For parents, gardening is a perfect teaching opportunity for their children even when it comes to growing food. But how exactly do you as a parent tear them away from their mobile games and get them interested in gardening? Here are some ideas to get the kids involved in growing food and gardening for the first time.
The inquisitive nature of children is such that they love to learn new things. But that’s especially true when it’s about living, growing things. It grabs their attention and makes them sit up and take notice.
Growing plants that respond to being watered with some species expanding in size quickly is enough to interest some kids right away. If they can see that a plant has grown larger by measuring it a week before and today, they will be pleased. Just make sure they know to be gentle with the plants, as kids can sometimes be heavy handed.
Growing Food on their own
While food may appear to be “made” at the supermarket or it magically appears out of the microwave or oven and conveniently lands on their plate, older kids know that’s not the case. The opportunity to take on some fun responsibility and grow vegetables of their own is a new thing. It’s one thing to be responsible for a city’s development in a computer game, but altogether something else to do it in real life.
Choose vegetables that are easier to grow and less prone to dying off. This will increase their likely success rate and avoid them giving up through disappointment.
Let Them Adjust Garden Watering Based on Rainfall
An excellent way to combine computer gadget knowledge with gardening that may provide some early fascination is through using a rain gauge. This can measure the rainfall levels to avoid overwatering the garden. Using a gauge like this, it’s possible to avoid saturating plants or vegetables, preventing healthy growth. They can check it each day, make notes, and decide what to do. Using a rain gauge, it’s possible to engage them on several levels while indirectly improving their results too. A Garden Plot of Their Own
A garden plot with their name on it will be something new (have them create a little sign to do just that). Instead of contributing to mommy’s or daddy’s garden, they can take full ownership.
Starting with raking the soil, and adding some fertilizer under supervision, they can then move onto planting some seeds for their favorite vegetables. Then water them every so often.
They will need some supervision from time to time to avoid little disasters like overwatering the soil or choosing out-of-season vegetable seeds. Also, avoid those that won’t grow with the level of sunlight their plot will receive.
Create a Fairy Garden
Some children will enjoy creating a fairy garden, adding plants, and building it up to be a little personal paradise. The garden can include a mini fairy garden house, some wooden steppingstones, soil, and a few plants scattered about. For small children who are new to gardening, it can be a gentler introduction on a smaller scale that won’t scare them off. You can plan and manage the garden together if they’re not feeling confident at first. Soon after, their confidence and creativity will start to grow, and they can take over.
Use a Garden Planning App
When you have a child who is a dab hand on their smartphone or tablet, take advantage of that by getting them to install a garden planning app. There are plenty to choose from. It can help give their mind something to wrestle with until they come up with a workable design. You can then help them bring their design to fruition.
A word of warning here: Don’t have them bite off more than they can chew. Section off an area of the garden for them to work from and let them get creative there. That way, their learning curve isn’t going to make a mess of the entire backyard and garden area. Also, if they suddenly decide that they’ve gotten bored and walk off, putting everything back to how it was before won’t be a total nightmare.
It’s always better to engage and get kids involved in gardening where they are at, so they can feel like they’re making the decision themselves. Otherwise, they may assume it’s just another chore, and won’t want to do it. And then you’ve lost them possibly for good.
It is hard to deny that what consumers want is healthy, cleaner ingredients in their food and Moonshot Crackers acknowledges this. We learn more as time goes by about the effects – good and bad – of the foods we eat. We used to be told fats are bad, so we replaced fats with sugar and was told that this is better. We were told that carbohydrates should be the foundation of our daily diet and now we find out how harmful having so many carbs in our day are and even contributing to deadly diseases and epidemics.
As consumers we really have to take it upon ourselves to dissect food labels and know when we are being ‘tricked’ into believing a food item is healthy. Moonshot is a cracker that I can assure you is safe in every ingredient they add!
If you look at most crackers on the market today (even so-called better crackers), you will find highly inflammatory oils, high gluten flours and many still contain BHT (a preservative banned in hundreds of countries, but not ours)! There are typically around 8-10 servings per box and many people can easily snack on much more than that at a time, causing you to have double or triple servings of these highly processed and inflammatory ingredients called a cracker.
Now, do you want to know how to find a better cracker? Don’t worry, these actually taste fantastic! My absolute favorite dip is the Everything But the Bagel Greek Yogurt Dip I get at Trader Joe’s with these Moonshot crackers. It is my dessert after dinner!
Moonshot Climate-Friendly Crackers are made with regeneratively grown ingredients that help store carbon and restore our soil. The crackers are made with stone-milled Edison wheat (with no bleach or bromates) and heart-healthy organic sunflower oil. The plant-based crackers have no added sugar and no preservatives and are USDA Organic and Non-GMO. Find the flavors – Sourdough Sea Salt, Rosemary Garlic, and Tomato Basil.
Julia Collins is the founder and is a Mom who wanted to create better products for her son and make sure the snack she creates will not leave a negative impact on our environment as many food products do! Her platform, Planet FWD builds technology to help food brands rethink the cycle of food production as an opportunity for regeneration. Farmers and brands work together to create products that source regeneratively grown ingredients that are less greenhouse gas intensive! That is what a better cracker with better ingredients looks like!
To find Moonshot Crackers, visit Moonshot Snacks to shop or find retailers near you. They are also available in some Northern California markets (hopefully in Seattle soon). Their carbon neutral shipping is free after $30 so ordering online is easy and affordable.
About every year (hence, Spring Cleaning time), I begin to feel like certain rooms need a revamp. Sometimes a room needs a fresh coat of paint or a closet clean out. Other rooms may just need some new decor. You can spend very little and make changes that seem small and simple and really make a room look better and refreshed such as with customizable jars. Brands like The Polished Jar can be the exact change your spaces need.
In my kitchen I redid my coffee area with a cute black and white coffee jar I found a few months back at Home Goods. Recently, I simply changed my dish and hand soap set up at the sink. It seems small, but it took this spot on my counter and gave it a modern update. The Polished Jar lets you choose and customize labels and jar colors and pumps.
For my kitchen I chose the Luxe collection for the label design with 1 white bottle with brass pump and 1 black bottle with black matte pump for dish soap and hand wash. Then I have The Polished Jar White Ceramic Tray to keep them on so that dish soap does not end up on the counter.
I loved the idea of this simple change to my counters that I knew I wanted to make a similar change to the guest bath that is right off of my kitchen. I replaced the shampoo, conditioner and body wash store bottles with The Polished Jar Luxe Collection (same as the kitchen design) in black jars with copper pumps to all look cohesive in that shower.
This guest bath of ours has a shower that no one ever uses. My guest bedroom is upstairs so if anyone stays over they use the full bath up there, so this is more of a stage for decorative shower soaps to see when someone needs to use the restroom when just over for dinner. What a difference! With free shipping at The Polished Jar US orders, it makes ordering these reasonably priced customizable jars so fantastic for yourself or as a gift.
The pumps work great! They just seem like great quality and of all of my jars, each pump works great right away. They have so many label designs to choose from to match your home style. You can even add monograms to some designs. Visit The Polished Jar to make these small updates to your spaces.
