How to Entertain Toddlers – A Comprehensive Guide for Parents

There are hundreds of things that you can provide to entertain toddlers in your care. But as a busy parent, you will fall short of ideas!

It happened with me. Time will fly and your toddler will quickly grow before you know. So, you need to provide a constructive set of entertainment sources that will help their mental development as well as physical fitness.

I talked with many parents about the sort of activities that they do to amuse their children. And.. believe me there is a lot of scope for creativity and idea generation here.

I got 10 entertainment ideas for toddlers and they are simple and inexpensive to pursue.

1. Books and Colors— Learn While Having Fun

Start with simple board books filled with colors and cartoons. You can guide them through the story and explain what’s going on.

For better engagement, a sketch book will work great. Just give your toddlers some nontoxic markers and let him fill in the colors. Don’t worry if it gets messy.

2. Introduce Them to Water Sports

Water games are most toddler’s favorite. There is something about water that toddlers find fascinating.

As a kid, my parents used to put me in a large plastic pool with all sorts of plastic toys. Among all the fun experiences I had in my childhood, this one was the most memorable.

You can also buy a sprinkler toy and your kid’s summer will be the best he will ever experience.

3. Take to the Beach or Make a Sandbox

Like water, sand is also a fun element. The patterns that your children can make on it fascinates them. Have a beach nearby? Take him there and encourage him to make shapes and different objects with sand.

Alternatively, you can make a sandbox from plastic and leave it in the backyard. The evening will become super enjoyable.

4. Break Toys and Fix Them

Breaking toys were my kid’s favorite activity. Though I don’t encourage it, kids are often curious about what’s inside their toys.

So, set aside some old or already broken toys and let them break and play. You can also encourage them to fix the toy after breaking with simple tools and drivers. Just make sure to supervise.

5. Give a Ride on a Wagon

Wagons have been a great toddler entertainment gear for generations. The feeling of riding on their own vehicle with wheels makes them excited.

Get a push wagon for toddlers that will add a different level of fun into your family. My kids used to go crazy when they knew it was time for a wagon ride.

6. Help Them to Climb

Before your child learns to walk, he will learn to crawl and climb. It’s a natural urge and you should make ways for them to climb, instead of suppressing it.

The local park can be suitable place for climbing with lots of blocks. You can also create stairs from wooden stuff inside your home. Just make sure to cover it with soft material.

Or… You can build some like this at home:

7. Let Them Make Their Own World Inside a Tent

You can get a nice cozy tent for your toddler. My kids spent most of their time inside their little tent. A lamp, toys and some pillows and you can’t believe how much your kid is going to appreciate this. It will become his own small private space that will make him feel like an individual.

8. Play Simple Games That Stimulates Them

Play games with your toddler. It can be anything— hide & seek, solving puzzles, racing with them, etc. Doing so will stimulate your baby’s mind and also keep him physically active. The relationship between you and the child will also become stronger.

9. Sing Songs Together

Try singing nursery rhymes like “Hush little baby,” and “rock a bye baby” to your little one. Sometimes it can help him to calm down. And before you know it, he will be singing with you one day. As a mother, this was my favorite activity and probably most mother’s.

10. Go on a Field Trip

Even if you are super busy, make a routine and go on field trips with your child. It will change their mood and expose them to new stimuli.

You can visit the nearby park, zoo, museum, pet stores and amusement parks. If you can’t go on field trips often, make sure he gets enough stuff at home to keep him busy.

Final Words…

These ideas will give you a head start and you can get creative and find more ways to entertain your kids. The more diversified experience your kids have in their childhood, the faster they will cope up with the environment. Whatever they do, make sure there is someone there to keep an eye on them.

7 Secrets To Finding An Epic Costume at Goodwill Stores

7 Secrets To Finding An Epic Costume at Goodwill Stores

My local Goodwill region (Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region) has 2 gals they call, Costume Experts. Having Whitney and Morena locally means we get great tips, talent displays and DIY ideas. Creating a costume that is unique makes Halloween so fun (or you can be a Baby Shark Mom with like else).

Whitney and Morena have put together some tips to finding a Costume that will stand out and I wanted to share a few of them with you below.

Use Your Smart Phone. Technology today allows us to merge what we scan on our phones to what we see in stores. Searching ideas on your phone and using images to know what items you need makes the outfit complete. Want to be ‘Grandpa”, search some photos and head to the men’s section of Goodwill.

Plan ahead. When you start now you can visit several stores in your area to piece the perfect items together. Having an 80’s family costume this year? You’ll find everything you need if you check all local stores and keep going back because new stuff is on the racks daily.

Have a budget. Most stores offer new and used costumes and costume ideas. If you are looking for a trending, new costume see if Goodwill has it for a lot less than most retailers. Is the budget thin? Shop used costumes and save even more.

Know your Halloween night plans. What will you be doing with your costume? Will you be outside in the cold, trick-or-treating with kids? Will you be at a kids party or adult party? Know your scene and then you can choose a costume with kid-friendly in mind or even weather in mind.

What are you favorite movies, TV shows? How do your favorite actors/actresses or characters dress? My son is a huge Stranger Things fan and he likes Steve’s character so he decided on Scoops Ahoy Steve for Halloween this year. You can find a lot of inspiration within your favorite media.

Leave the Halloween section. If you are visiting Goodwill stores for your costume hunt, leave the Halloween section to find the right pieces for tops, bottoms, hats, socks, etc. elsewhere in the store.

Find a Goodwill helper. Most stores have DIY experts that can help you find costume necessities and even help find a style or idea you’ll love. There are ‘Whitney’s and Morena’s’ at Goodwill stores nationwide so check your stores experts.

Don’t forget to think about year-round needs while there. My son is in the middle of October Awareness week at school. When I was Back to School shopping I kept colors in mind so we are good to go this week for Orange Day for Anti-Bullying and Pink/Black Day for Breast Cancer Awareness. It’s always a good idea to grab those bright color items in your kids sizes for school events when visiting Goodwill stores especially if they are the day’s colored tag sales.

Goodwill thrift store sales fund free education in a variety of career fields such as culinary, barista, construction, advanced manufacturing, warehouse, computers and more. Shop to help your local community and continue the cycle by donating your past Halloween attire along with other household items!

3 All natural supplements and vitamins that keep your kids healthy

3 All natural supplements and vitamins that keep your kids healthy

Last year was brutal. Our youngest had a sinus infection, colds a few times and even got Type A flu with 2 other classmates who also tested positive and they were vaccinated! This year is good so far except I already have co-workers with head colds so it is starting.

When Anthony came home last week to say many kids were not in his classes because they called in sick I broke out the supplements and there are 3 I keep close by – Elderberry Gummies, Nature Nose Beast and Immune Boost.

It is important that our supplements do not contain synthetic ingredients. Anthony’s natural supplements come from JoySpring. I have been pitched and researched on my own many supplement and vitamin brands and I narrowed it down to JoySpring. I just love the natural, organic and allergen free formulas. While typical immune boosters for kids contain synthetic ingredients or chemicals, their immune support liquid is 3rd party tested and safe for infants, toddlers & growing kids.

You may wonder why I have Elderberry and Immune Boost. The difference in these two are that the Elderberry Blend+ drops contain Organic Elderberry, Mullein Leaf, Marshmallow Root, Angelica Root, Orange Peel, Calendula Flower. Immune Boost drops contain Organic Echinacea Purpurea Root, Oregon Grape Root, Lemon Peel, Thyme Leaf, Black Walnut Hull.

The way I use these 3 supplements is that everyday Anthony gets the Elderberry Gummies or drops as maintenance germ fighting. Then when allergy season hits he gets the Nasal Nose Beast drops as well. I use the Immune Boost in place of our Elderberry when I know he is exposed to germs, kids in class sick or we are sick, for a powerful germ-fighter against live viruses.

I would also use the Immune Boost and Elderberry together near the Holidays or finals at school because JoySpring supplements and vitamins are ok to mix and he is 11 so his older age means we can up dosage a bit. With Elderberry power and the Immune Boost (Echinacea) power he is really covered. I do space each out am and pm so he is not taking too much at a time for his stomach’s sake.

While my son has sinus issues I love that they have Nature Nose Beast drops that are a blend of Elderberry, Elecampane Root, Lungwort Leaf & Astragalus Root to fight allergies, congestion and inflammation. JoySpring says that the ingredients are widely considered the safest homeopathic remedy, these respiratory herbs can also be used to loosen congestion caused by seasonal colds, the flu & other illnesses that affect breathing. Just 2-3 drops per day by mouth or mixed into food/drink.

The end of this season will tell for sure if we can stay healthier this year. For now, he is going strong in his first year at Middle School. You can find even more than the 3 supplements options I recommended by visiting JoySpring and stocking up for the upcoming seasons.

Learn How To Make Your Own Animation Videos – Online Course

Learn How To Make Your Own Animation Videos - Online Course

This summer I sat our youngest down as we do all our boys through the years and made a summer learning plan. On one hand I do not want to destroy their summer break, yet I know that the summer slide is real and it can take several weeks to get back into learning mode when it has disappeared so many months. In all of my research and own trials, just 20 minutes a day is enough. So, I try to find fun ways to incorporate some learning.

Anthony had asked for some animation tablet accessories for his birthday last spring and has been wanting to learn to use it. We discovered Outschool that has so many online courses for kids from subjects to how-to’s like how to make your own animation videos, how to code, etc. and STEM-inspired. They even have different ‘video game’ related learning. He found a course and we signed up: How To Make Awesome Animated Movies.

Here is a very brief overview of Anthony’s course below:

Anthony logged on every Thursday from 3-3:50 for 4 weeks. Each week they were given a lesson and then for the week had a (fun) assignment to share next class.

Once you register for a course at Outschool or even join their email list you get notified every time new classes start or are added. There are so many! And some classes are just a couple of dollars. You see who teaches the classes and can click on their profiles, options for class times and all you will need before day one such as programs to download or equipment you’ll need, etc. By the time the class starts everyone should be ready to roll so it is seamless.

Being as how my son took a class that mainly consisted of his age group (you can sort classes by age group so younger kids don’t end up in teens classes and vice versa) some kids were setting up solo and needed extra help, but the Teacher was good about allowing a few moments to walk these kids through it and move on for the rest of the class. You always have access to direct message your Teacher too if you have questions you need to ask without the entire class. It was a fun experience and a great way to add some extra learning at home.

Head over to the online courses at Outschool today and find something fun to learn about!
