What is whey protein and why should you consume it?

What is whey protein?

When cheese is made, whey is leftover, protein-rich liquid after the milk is strained and curdled. If you remember science class, protein is what supports our amino acid chains. You have the amino acids linking together to form peptide bonds. These chains of amino acids are called polypeptides or proteins. There are many different proteins in the body and protein is what makes up about 50% of the dry weight of most cells in our body. One of the supports that protein offers is building and repairing of muscle. As we age, it becomes harder for our body to retain muscle mass. This is why a consistent amount of protein daily is recommended. So why do we need the ‘whey’ protein?
Whey protein is a complete protein, meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids. It is also lower in lactose. When you do resistance exercise, whey protein is highly beneficial in the growth of lean tissue mass and improves muscle protein synthesis needed to maintain muscle mass. Many studies have shown that men who supplemented with whey protein for resistance exercise had much greater gains in strength, lean body mass and a decrease in fat mass compared to resistance training without the whey protein supplement. 
There are even more benefits to supplementing with whey protein besides the improved muscle and lean tissue mass. Whey protein can lower cholesterol. It also improves immune responses in children which is beneficial in children with asthma. Other studies show that whey protein aids in lowering blood pressure in patients with hypertension
As you can see, whey protein is almost as much a benefit in its own way as the actual performance of resistance exercising alone. There is little effects in taking too much protein and the benefits are huge. The only caution are with those allergic to milk may have a high allergy response to whey.
