Being a parent is one of the hardest things to do. It is the most rewarding, though. It can be a little overwhelming when you have a few small humans that you are now in charge of. Everything that you do is for them and to make sure that they are healthy and well. Being well is such an important thing for anyone. But when you are, at first, the person that is responsible for someone else’s health, it can feel a bit much. It can be tricky knowing where to start and what you should do.
The first thing is to realize that everyone will get sick at some point. You, unfortunately, can’t stop your children from getting no illness at all. Getting some sickness is good for them, as it can help to build up their immune system. It will teach their body to fight off infection and for it to be strong. You can do things to stop your children getting ill all the time, though. One of those things is through a healthy and varied diet.
Children need to have a lot of vitamins and minerals as their bodies are growing at such a rapid rate. So make sure their diet is full of fruits and vegetables. You also need to make sure that there is plenty of protein in their diet, from meat and fish or beans and pulses. Good fats are important in their diet too. Nuts and avocado are great sources of those. Just avoid too much sugar in their diet. Natural sugar from fruit is the best option if they want something sweet. Grains and dairy are good to have too, but all in moderation. If your child can’t have something because of an allergy, then look into appropriate supplements that they can have. If they can’t have dairy, then they should look at having something like a calcium supplement.
A healthy lifestyle and routine can also avoid any unnecessary illness in your children. Making sure they exercise regularly will help to make them fit and strong. It will help their heart and lungs too; exercise is great all round! Having a good bathing routine will help to avoid getting sickness too. Make sure they learn to wash their hands properly and to brush their teeth regularly.
When illnesses do occur, make sure you have the numbers of emergency contacts on hand. Having the doctor’s number or a 24 Hourly Dentist on hand is a great idea. Then you can nip an illness in the bud and stop it in it’s tracks.
Another key thing to having healthy children is to follow the vaccination schedule. Make sure that they are up to date. It will stop them from catching a harmful disease and it will protect the others around them too. I know some people can be nervous about this when they have a newborn baby. But it is best to speak to your doctor or midwife about the implications and the schedule.
