Car Accident: do I need an attorney?

Being involved in a car accident can be extremely upsetting. You might have an injury, significant damages to your vehicle and feel anxious about getting back on the road. Unless you’ve been in a car accident before, you’ll probably have hundreds of questions, such as who pays for car accident damages? Was the accident your fault? Do you need to get an attorney?

In most cases, an attorney will be helpful and will answer these questions for you. So, what situations might call for an attorney after a car accident?

Disputes over blame

No one wants to believe they’re at fault in a car accident. It can be horrible living with the knowledge that your actions caused pain, distress or financial worry to someone else. Car accidents happen all the time, and whilst they may not always be the fault of a driver, cell phone use, lack of sleep or distractions in the vehicle mean that, more often than not, another driver is to blame. If you’ve been in a car accident and there are disputes over who was at fault, it might be useful to hire an attorney. This person will be able to cover the events of the incident and bring them to court. It will make your life much easier and you won’t have to personally fight the battle.

Fatalities

In serious situations, car accidents might involve fatalities. If you’re unfortunate enough to be in the situation where you had a car accident and someone you love passed away, you’ll be feeling extremely shaken and, during the grieving period, you probably won’t want to be involved in any kind of legal battle. However, you may wish to hire an attorney to fight the battle on your behalf and make the situation as straight forward as possible. Alternatively, if you’ve been in a car accident where you may have been the cause of injuries or fatalities, you will most definitely want to hire an attorney.

Injuries

Most serious car accidents will also involve injuries. Whilst these might be minor, such as whiplash or sprains, you could have long-lasting issues from broken bones, internal bleeding or brain injuries. When someone has been seriously injured in a car accident, they’ll probably need to take time off work, pay medical bills and potentially even adjust their home to cater for a new condition or disability. If this is the case, hiring an attorney is a good decision, as they hopefully will be able to get you a settlement which will take off some of the financial strain.

Time off

Being involved in a car accident can be extremely distressing, and you may need to take time off work afterwards. This might be to recover from any injuries, but it could also be to recover mentally from the trauma. Some people might need to see a therapist. If this is the case, hiring an attorney might be useful to help your finances after the accident and to ease your recovery.
