After you have had a significant amount of time off work to raise a family, going back again can be an extremely daunting prospect. But re-entering the workplace is something that people do on a regular basis, and there is no reasons why you can’t do the same thing. If you are looking to do this but feel uneasy about the transition, here is some advice which you should find useful.

Explore Your Career Interests

To begin with, you need to decide whether you would like to take a similar role to one you have had in the past or whether you want to try something different entirely. Think about the things that interest you and start to associate a few career paths with them. Next, do some research about what it takes to get into that job role. It may be that you need to build your skills before you are able to get your desired position.

Improve Your Skills

Workplaces are changing and developing at such a rapid rate that there are likely to be some skills which you need to update. Many of these are technology based, and you can either learn about them yourself or get support from others. Perhaps you could look into the online learning options that are available to you such as and imc graduate program. Building up your skills can also help you to feel more confident before heading back into a working environment.

Update Your Resume

You will already be well aware that the time that you had off to raise your family was not wasted, but you also need to convince potential employers of this fact on your resume. Consider the skills that you have acquired during your time out of work. Maybe you have been doing some volunteer work at your kids’ school or another club which is worth talking about. Perhaps you have been running a blog or you have taken other qualifications. Anything relevant that you can think of needs to be discussed.

Spread the Word that You Are Getting Back to Work

Rather than keeping your job search a secret, it is a good idea to tell as many people as possible. After all, a huge percentage of jobs are filled through networking. Everyone has connections and you never know who could help you out along the way. Another way that you could network is to join a professional organisation. Making connections is something that always stands you in good stead.

Practice Interview Skills

It is likely to have been a long time since your last interview, so it is worth brushing up on your skills before you embark on your next one. Prepare some possible interview questions and responses. It can help for a friend to go through all of these with you. This way, when you get into the interview situation, you will at least feel a little more prepared and a little less overwhelmed.
