Being a parent is a very tough job, and since children don’t come with an instruction manual, it’s often hard to determine what’s right and what’s wrong. However, you should never feel ashamed for making a mistake, because all parents do it—no matter what they may tell you. However, in order to avoid making the same mistake over and over again, it’s important that you learn what these mistakes are and figure out the best way to stop them. The following are five mistakes that most parents make regarding their child’s health.
Mistake #1: Using a regular dentist.
Face it. Even as an adult, there are things about the dentist you don’t like. Now think of this from a child’s perspective. Scary, right? Many parents make the mistake in taking their child to a general dentist, and this may not be the best thing, especially if their dentist doesn’t specialize in children. Kids can be fussy. They can be fidgety. They can be downright a pain to deal with, and it’s important that you pick a dentist that can work with your child. Pediatric or family dentists are always a good choice. These individuals know how to handle children, and they can ensure that your child receives the right dental care they need at their specific age.
Mistake #2: Over-feeding.
Take your hand and make a fist. That’s about the size of your stomach. Now think of this from your child’s perspective. It’s much smaller, which means their stomachs are also much smaller. Yes, kids can be fussy when it comes to eating, but if your child takes down half of that hot dog, they’ve eaten pretty good. Don’t compare what you eat to what your child should eat; otherwise, you could end up giving your child a stomach ache or being the cause for childhood obesity.
Mistake #3: Being overly sensitive to germs.
It’s true. Germs do cause illnesses, but your child also needs to be exposed to some germs in order to improve their immune system. If you are constantly wiping your child down with wet wipes or hand sanitizer, they are going to miss out on a lot of activities because they will catch everything that comes their way. Instead, relax and little and let your child play in the dirt and run around with other kids. It will help them in the long run.
Mistake #4: Too much junk food.
Junk food is a temptation for everyone, no matter their age. However, it can cause many health problems, and over-indulging is never a good thing. Thankfully, many companies know that there are certain foods children love, but they also know parents want their children to eat healthy. The result? “Junk” food that’s good for you. For instance, did you know that there are healthy alternatives to popular items such as cheese puffs or potato chips? There are, and they don’t taste like cardboard either. If you want your child to feel as if he or she is able to eat the junk food, then provide them with the healthy junk food options.
Mistake #5: Not enough exercise.
In a world inundated with technology, it’s hard to not find yourself indulged in a smartphone, tablet, or smart TV. However, while it is sometimes easy to put an iPad in your child’s lap and call it a day, it’s not the best thing for them. Yes, there are educational games on mobile devices, but children today still need physical activity. Get your child involved in some type of activity. If it just won’t fit into your schedule, then you need to make sure you do something active with them on a regular basis, whether it’s taking the dog for a walk, going for a bike ride, or even playing a game in the yard. The more you can do for your child, the better his or her overall health will be.
Taking care of your child is a hard responsibility, and being a parent will come with plenty of wins and losses. However, when it comes to your child’s health, be sure that you are not making any of these mistakes.
