Good Dogs, Great Listeners
by Renata Bowers with JoAnn and Joel Bacon
(parents of Charlotte Bacon, victim in Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy)
I have a 7 year old son who loves to read, but that has not always been the case with him. Even still, some days I have to talk him into his daily reading. Then there are days he is walking with a book in his face. Lately, he even is grabbing papers and writing his own stories. For Charlotte, her parents had the same battles of trying to get her to do her daily reading. When an accident happens with her beloved Dog, Charlotte is forced to lay low with her companion so what else to do with a dog that is healing? Read to her! That is what started Charlotte’s love of reading and how a dog inspired her.
Dogs are great listeners and as kids there is so much joy for many reasons that come with sitting around a dog with a good book. Programs like Charlotte’s Litter have done such great things for child therapy in many situations by providing a dog to read to. Charlotte’s Litter is aspiring to promote the use of therapy dogs in schools and other settings. Inspired by Charlotte, a victim in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, the young girls love of animals is shared by many children. Bringing in therapy dogs to the students helped tremendously after that tragedy and the spirit of that healing will live on in the Charlotte’s Litter program.
Joel, JoAnn and Guy Bacon are the parents and brother of Charlotte Bacon, who died as a result of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Charlotte was just 6 years old but left a bold impression on everyone she met. The Bacon family has founded and developed a number of projects to honor their spirited Charlotte, share her joy and beauty, and advocate for what has helped them most as they grieve.
Both books, Good Dogs, Great Listeners and The Dogs of Newtown, are able to stand alone, but are also used as tools for the Charlotte’s Litter Program. Charlotte Bacon’s bold story, the things she loved, and the Bacon family’s own grief process have contributed to a brand that is unique to their family.
The Bacon family lives in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. They will always be a family of four.

This month is already becoming so hectic. I have had to take time around work to sneak in extra shopping time, plan recipes and be prepared for parties and events. My kids want to hit up light displays and Santa needs a visit. We seem to be coming and going a lot more than usual this month with so much to prepare for and to stay in the holiday spirit. As much as you feel the added stress, so do your pets. They are most likely to feel stress when a usual routine changes suddenly.
Puppies and Dogs bring joy to us all year long and especially during the Holidays we need to remember them for all that they bring our families. There are brands and products out there that help with with fun ways to include our dogs in our holiday festivities from dog stockings to santa coats and festive dog bedding. We may feel we don’t give them much of our time but we really do want what’s best for them.
Don’t forget to make your dog feel special when days get stressful. Like children, they love one-on-one time and don’t forget to reward them even through the chaos. especially if you are hosting a gathering at your home with several strangers to your dog, have something special on hand to offer throughout the day or evening. Zukes has treats with only the finest natural ingredients that are free of common allergens, harsh additives and preservatives. Nothing but the best with options they will love.
Zuke’s Genuine Jerky Steaks are a great option to have on hand. They are a good size treat that come in flavors your dog will love from Beef & Sweet Potato, Beef & Potato and Beef & Carrot. Your dog gets to devour a treat and benefit from the Omega-3 rich variety that comes from grass-fed New Zealand beef. No nitrates are used to preserve and they are natural. They deserve the best so give them treats with the best of ingredients. Zuke’s carries any treats from jerky to bones they will love. You will find Zuke’s in pet stores near you including some CO-OP’s.

We open the door and they gladly hop inside! Our dog’s love to be with us wherever we go and whether your family pet enjoys the car or gets a little nervous, it is important we consider their safety in the backseat as we do for ourselves and children. Solvit Pet Products is committed to providing you the products needed to protect your pooch as well as your car!
Will your dog wear a seat restraint? Many do, but my 1 year old Grand Dog acts like we are trying to torture him if we confine him in the backseat inside a belt. It is more distracting for my son and potentially he could be hurt flopping around back there trying to get out of it. I wish he would restrain because it would be the safest for him in the event they would get in an accident. Solvit has pet steps, ramps and restraints for the back seat as well as other options for Dog’s like my son’s.
My son uses this back seat cover for Cam. With fabric that provides cushion and luxury for Cam, it keeps him confined to the back so he is not distracting the driver and the seats stay protected as well. Perfect after that swim in a lake or muddy paws in the car after a run. There are even 2 storage pockets to toss the leash or towels into so he is not walking all over them in the back. It is machine washable as well!
Consider all Solvit products for gift ideas this season!
One lucky reader will win a Deluxe Sta-Put™ Hammock Seat Cover. Enter below. Open to US and ends on 12/17.

PawPack subscription boxes for dogs
The best timing ever was when I received our PawPack during the week we were pet sitting our oldest son’s dog, Cam. I had no idea how much dog’s like mail too. My 7 year son old gets excited when he sees a box meant for him, but when I opened the PawPack and invited Cam to go through it I about got knocked over as he must of smelled the contents and took over going through the contents. The box for October had fun Halloween toys, a cute bandana and healthy treats. Everything a Dog could hope for delivered to the porch.
This box had 2 full size bags of treats with ingredients I love for Cam. The pumpkin flavored WholeLife Living Treats were the perfect freeze dried treat and he loves them! These are made in the USA and provides live active cultures in a blend of greek yogurt, pumpkin, raw apples, ground flax seed and carrots. Because they are freeze dried and offer crisp snack there is no loss of nutrients in the process.
The Look Who’s Happy Tempt’n Tenders were a hit as well. This is a chicken with pumpkin crust recipe that is slow cooked in soft jerky shaped treats. They are grain & gluten free with no by-products, hormones or artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. He can actually be a picky dog and both of these were highly enjoyed by him.
Because it’s fall, this fun Halloween bandana from Latham & Co. is adorable! Full of vibrant colors and fun designs.
There were 2 toys just right for him in the box. The biggest hit was the ZippyPaws Burrows puzzle toy. It was a plush gravestone with 3 candy corn plush bats he had to fish out of the grave. I would stuff them in and we would work feverishly, running around trying to pull them back out. The moment I tore off the tag and handed it to him it was although he understood there was something inside he needed to pull out. The best part is that the bats squeak so he is rewarded in the end after he can get them out of the gravestone.
Our new fetch toys is an adorable Frankenstein with rope arms from CharmingPet Spooky Slideez. The Frankenmonster has been attacked quite a bit by Cam and he loves him.
Because I am all about the value in these subscription boxes, I did the math. Cam qualifies as a Medium dog and all of the toys were just right for him. If you pay month by month you get a box at $39.99, but the more months you commit to up front you save more on each box. With a 1 year commitment you only pay $29.99 a box and that is a great deal! I added the retail of every product in this box and I would have paid about $44. So you are not losing money month to month, but you are getting a great deal with packages up to 1 year. But, many times you will find promo codes on their website and even on Facebook so make sure you keep following to keep them in mind for the holidays and take advantage of the promos because then you know you are saving big!
If you have a family or friend that loves their do as much as our son does, this is such a great gift to give that keeps on coming all year long!

If you are a Dog owner your dog may fall under one of these two categories-active or inactive. The active dog has room to roam all of the time-they go on your runs with you , hike trails, swim often and take off with you all day for your weekly hunting or biking trips. The inactive dog gets exercise on days you feel like throwing on a leash for a bit-lays around indoors most days and on a rare occasion gets a run on the beach. Depending on your dog’s exercise level and calories they burn will decide the treats that are right for them.
The Active Dog
If your dog falls under the active category, how many calories do you think they burn compared to humans? Would you be surprised if I told you they burn less than half as many as we do? They are simply a better athlete than humans. When you feel you’ve burned enough calories to consume an entire hot dog, your dog burned enough to get less than half of that hot dog! What do you feed the active dog as a reward or treat after a long and active day? You should feed digestible carbohydrates, protein and some healthy fats.
Some great Zuke’s treats for the active dog are Zuke’s Power Bones or Zuke’s Genuine Jerky. My active grandpuppy has the Genuine Jerky treats in all 3 flavors- original beef, barbecue beef and teriyaki beef. They are naturally preserved so you won’t find nitrates or nitrites nor will you find grain. They are made with pure New Zealand grass-fed beef offering extra protein and rich in Omega-3. With ingredients like real beef, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar and spices like salt, paprika, celery powder and garlic powder, these are a great choice for pets with special dietary needs.
The Inactive Dog
Now having an inactive dog is not necessarily a bad thing! Many breeds like he Mastiff, Shih Tsu and the Bassett Hound to name a few are naturally laid back dogs. Dog’s that are recovering from injury or surgery may also be temporarily inactive for their own good. For whatever reason your dog does not fit the active category there are treats by Zuke’s that are right for them such as the new Skinny Bakes.
The Skinny Bakes treats come in 2, 5, 10 and 20 calorie varieties. The Skinny Bakes 2s come in 3 flavors: yogurt & honey, yogurt & maple syrup and yogurt & vanilla. They are great for training puppies and toy breeds. The Skinny Bakes 5s come in 3 flavors: peanut butter & blueberries, peanut butter & apples and peanut butter & cranberries. Great for small to large dogs. The Skinny Bakes 10s come in 3 flavors: cherries & berries, peanut butter & banana and pumpkin & sweet potato. The Skinny Bakes 20s come in 3 flavors: coconut & acai, coconut & aronia berry and coconut & pomegranate. All treats are made with brown rice or oatmeal, barley and rice bran. They are a healthy vegan treat without soy, corn or wheat.
Knowing which treats and when are right for your dog will help their overall health! If you like these careful ingredients in Zuke’s treats, you’ll love the rest of their products including some for your feline as well!

When you see or hear of supplement and vitamin stores, what comes to your mind? Perhaps you think of multi-vitamins, protein supplements, probiotics and immune support. But, does your pet come to mind? Your pet may not come to mind because many of these shops just don’t have the products to accommodate your pet. There is one shop that believes that every body matters and the Vitamin Shoppe has all of your pet health needs.
At the Vitamin Shoppe you will find chews, dental products, ear care, supplements and more for your pet. Our son just got a new puppy and Cam needs care too. He loves to hike and swim and making sure his ears are dried properly after a swim is the best way to prevent ear infections. At about 11 months, he needs chews for those young teeth.
We chose 3 basic products to start for Cam. The Breath-Less Chewable Brushless-Tooth Paste chews are a great way to keep plague down and his breath better than it tends to be by the end of the day. You can choose the size that fits your dog best.
We also chose the Nutri Vet Pet-Ease Soft Chews because not only do they work great in the puppy training stage for a small treat, but it also calms him. The treats contain chamomile and tryptophan to help him while anxious when left alone or on trips.
The other necessity for any dog owner is an ear Relief dry solution. Whether your dog gets wet swimming or bathing, water left in the ears can cause infections. The Vets Best Ear Relief Dry solution is gentle and will get used often!
Now is a great time to stock your pet’s health supplies back up and you will love the prices at the Vitamin Shoppe where you can browse all you need from home online to be shipped. Orders of $25 or more ship free.
