Moving to a new apartment is an exciting time. You get your own place with your partner, and you can’t wait to decorate it how you like. It’s a great way of being independent and spending time together. But it can be a costly time as there’s so much you both will need so that you can live there happily together. Here’re ten essentials to buy for your new apartment.
You need to buy a set of plates to use in your new apartment. Not only do you need them for everyday use, but you also need to have plates for dinner parties. You should firstly decide on the kitchen color you will be having and then have a look for a set that matches this. Go for a set of unique plates for something a bit different. Why not choose some square or rectangular plates that stand out. Make sure you buy a full set, so you don’t have to go back and find more at a later date. After all, you don’t know how long the shop will sell them for.
Another essential you will need in your new apartment is a set of cutlery. They are a necessity to put in your kitchen so that you can enjoy your dinner together. You should consider buying a set that you can use every day and then get another set for special occasions. Decide how many you will need as you can get sets of 12, 38, 60 or even 100 which you can use for years to come.
You will need to buy a new mattress for your apartment if you want you and your partner to get some sleep. It’s so important to get an excellent mattress, so you are not moving around in the night and wake up in the morning with a backache. You can read Ted and Stacey’s best mattress guide, so you know which one to get. There are so many around to choose from including duck feather mattress. Try and avoid secondhand mattresses, as they are more likely to have issues such as bed bugs.
Another essential item you need in your new apartment is a set of towels. Decide what color scheme you will want in your bathroom then buy towels which match this. Make sure you purchase two of each, so you both have your own to use. You should get a bath towel and a larger bath towel that you can use on a daily basis. You may want to purchase a face towel in the same set as well. Make sure you buy some spare towels for when yours are in the wash and for when guests are over.
An item that you need when you move into your new apartment is a kettle. It’s an essential item for the kitchen, and you should pick one which matches your color scheme. You will need it to boil water, for when you have a drink, and when you’re cooking. Often you can get other kitchen essentials such as a toaster to match it. Make sure you keep your receipt just in case you need to take it back.
Another kitchen item which is a necessity when you move into your new apartment is a toaster. You will use it at breakfast time and is great for when people stay over. Again, you should pick one which matches the rest of the kitchen. You should decide whether to get a two or four bread one if you both eat a lot of toast every day.
A sofa is an essential item for your new apartment, but it can be more costly than the other items. The one good thing about purchasing a couch now is it will last such a long time that you can use it for years to come. As it’s so expensive, you may need to pay it in installments or even ask your parents if you could borrow some money so you can get one. You can look in secondhand stores to find one you like if necessary, and then replace it when you get more funds at a later date. Make sure to buy a throw and some cushions to help make it look more personal to you and your partner. You should also get some spare chairs so that you can use them when you have guests over.
Another costly item that is an essential for your new apartment is a set of table and chairs. It’s never a good idea to start eating in front of the television as it can be unsociable, and also mean that you can get food all over the sofa and lounge floor. You can have a look for cheaper table and chairs online, or take a look in second hand stores to see if anyone is getting rid of any that you can use. You can buy some tables which can be folded up after you have used them and put away.
Unless you want to put all your clothes in drawers, you need to buy a wardrobe so that you can store all your clothes in there. It will keep them looking nice and will mean you won’t have to get the iron out all the time as they won’t get all creased. You may want to go through your clothes and put them in piles of summer and winter before putting them in there. You may want to put all the other season away in a drawer and then swap them over. Try and get a wardrobe with plenty of space so you both can use it.
You will end up bringing a lot of your stuff that will not have a new home at your apartment. Therefore, you should buy some storage boxes so that you can keep them in there. Then you can keep the boxes underneath your bed, and take out the stuff when you need to use it.
Once you have bought these essentials, you can then move on to buying more fun stuff you will need for your new home.
We all take our home furnace for granted. They heat our homes during the colder winter months which keeps our family healthy and comfortable. They aren’t difficult to maintenance and are relatively reliable. But when they stop working, we realize just how much we need them. Even though summer is nearly here, this is the best time to start investigating whether your furnace needs replacing or not. The last thing you want is to be without one when you need it later in the year. To get the process started, here are some telltale signs that your furnace needs replacing.
Furnace specialists estimate that well-maintained furnaces can last between 16 and 20 years. So if yours falls into this age bracket, you will more than likely need to replace it. Even if your furnace seems to be working, use this opportunity to start shopping for a new one. Talk to a furnace specialist and do some research in the most up to date models. Many homeowners will put this off because new models can be expensive. But if your furnace is old, you’ll undoubtedly have to pay for repairs and higher energy bills as a result. So it’s better to replace it before this occurs. Consider using a furnace rental company where you pay a set amount for the appliance each month. This can often be more budget-friendly and gets your furnace replaced quickly.
Increase in your energy bills
Another sign that your furnace needs replacing is an increase in your energy bills each month. This again is often caused by old age and if the furnace has not been maintained properly. The rise in your bills is a result of the appliance having to work harder to heat your home. Refer to your bank statements and utility bills to compare how much you spend on your heating each month. If you notice a significant rise, try changing your furnace’s air filters as this can boost efficiency. If once you have done this, there is no sign of a reduction in your bills, replacement is the next step.
If your furnace needs frequent repairs for multiple issues, this is another sign that it needs replacing. This can be caused by poor maintenance, age, and improper installation. All of which can lead to issues such as leaks, no heat being produced and irregular temperatures. But the cost of these repairs can slowly add up, as well as being extremely inconvenient. You could put your money to better use by buying or renting a new model that is more reliable and efficient. Hire a repair service to inspect the functionality of your furnace and to see if it needs more repairs. If it does, replacing it will be a far smarter option.
Replacing or fixing your furnace now will prevent your family being cold at home when the autumn and winter months return. It can also save you money in the long run. So if you notice any of these signs, contact a furnace repair service to gain their advice and recommendations.
Sometimes there are pests in our home that we cannot see or hear. The silent problematic ones. Bed bugs are one of those examples. For those who are unsure, bed bugs are small blood sucking insects that can live in the crevices and cracks surrounding your bed. They are attracted to your body heat and carbon dioxide. They creep out at night and feed off your exposed skin while you sleep. Much like mosquitos do. They are not pleasant creatures.
If you are unsure of what you are looking for there are some bed bugs pictures online. These can make you more aware of what you are dealing with. If a bed bug bites, not everyone develops a skin irritation. Some people will develop small itchy red bumps on the affected area. They will tend to appear anytime after 15 minutes since the bite occurred. They most likely appear on your face, neck, arms or hands. To be honest, they are commonly mistaken for mosquito bites. However, mosquito bites tend to be random whereas bed bug bites will appear in a straight line. While they are not infectious or carry diseases. It’s always best to combat the issue and get rid of them as soon as possible. Females can lay up to 300 eggs over their lifetime, the problem can and will get worse very quickly. It can be every parent’s worse nightmare to find that their child’s bed, or indeed their own, is infested with bed bugs. So I thought I would share with you some ways in which to get rid of those pesky critters once and for all.
There are few signs that would indicate a problem with bed bugs. Your first sign will be if you have a skin irritation to a bite. However if your skin hasn’t been affected, then there are a few other signs to look out for. You room may have developed a musty smell; this is because adult bed bugs produce a particular odour that can linger. Look out for any mottled shells in your bedroom where an adult may have shed. You may also spot black dots on your bedding. Which could be dried feces. Or any blood spots where you may have rolled over and squashed one after they have bitten.
They have flat bodies, so that they can squeeze into the tightest of spaces. They tend to prefer wood or fabric over anything else. So check your mattress, behind your headboard and even in the joints of your bed frame. They can travel to get to you, so they may even be between the wall and carpet, behind smoke alarms or in other furniture. They could be anywhere in your bedroom so bear that in mind when you are looking.
How do I get rid of them?
Now you know the history and can see you have an infestation, then now is the time to tackel the problem. Depending on how bad the infestation is, you may have to call in a local pest control.
De-clutter your bedroom
The best thing to do is rid your room of any clutter. Any clothes or things that are lying around. If you have had clothes on the floor in piles, it would be advisable to re-wash those at 60-degrees. This temperature in your washing machine is high enough to kill any that were among it, and eggs that have been laid. Having a clearer space will be much easier to get rid of any others or determine exactly where they are.
Wash your bed linen
Just like you have washed any clothes, put your bed linen through a wash as soon as possible at the highest temperature. This will eradicate any eggs that have been laid and clean your bedding and sheets thoroughly.
Dismantle your bed and furniture if needed
You will be advised to dismantle your bed frame so that you can inspect every crevice available. If you spot any bed bugs vacuum them up using the hose end. Make sure you dispose of the contents straight away. If you have spotted any bed bugs on furniture, it would be advisable to dismantle those as well to give it a full inspection.
You can buy a specialist spray from a local store that is specific to bed bugs. Spray it in the infested areas. Follow all instructions on the bottle to avoid any further issues arising. You will not be able to apply this directly to your bed linen or mattress. Washing those at a high temperature will be enough.
Be prepared to change your mattress
You may have to throw out your mattress if it has been infested heavily. There will be no going back from it. However, you should be able to see the bed bugs so use a vacuum to hoover them up. This may mean you can save your current mattress.
How do I prevent an infestation happening again?
While it is difficult to stop something like this happening completely, there are things you can do to help. Bed bugs can be transported without knowing. So it’s best to regularly inspect your mattress and bedding. Taking immediate action if you spot any signs what’s so ever. It would always be advisable to stay away from purchasing second hand mattress and older beds.
Keeping your bedroom space clean and tidy is another way to reduce the risk of infestation. Especially if you can keep clutter off the floor and under the bed. This reduces the amount of hiding places for the bed bugs.
I hope this guide helps you deal with any issues that may come your way in the future. It’s always best to be safe than sorry. If you find yourself suffering from a bite that seems to be excessively itchy and red, then you may need to seek some advice from a professional. Just incase it has gotten infected.
Don’t worry too much. Heavy infestations aren’t as common as you would think. It’s just best to be vigilant and take action early if you spot any of the signs.
More than an electronic photo frame, the Nixplay Seed Edition frame keeps all of your loved ones connected. By this, I mean that this frame stores photos you have taken or photos that family and friends you approve can add to and instantly have them displayed in your home. I’ll explain how this works below. Can you imagine a child’s birthday party that all family may not be able to attend, but they can send photos and even add text right to the home on the displayed frame? That would make the day even more special.
Choose a Nixplay Seed Unit
The Nixplay Seed comes in 3 sizes and 4 colors. You can order a 7, 8 or 10 inch frame in black, blue, mango or mulberry. The frame comes with the newly updated mobile app for iOS and Android. The frame is always ‘on’. It uses Wi-Fi connectivity to display photos sent from anywhere in the world instantly. You can send photos using the mobile app or web app. No memory cards or sticks are used. The frame rests on it’s own cord to stand up.
Upload Photos and Create Playlists
The first thing you do is turn on your frame and follow the on screen instructions. Using your remote you will connect the frame to your Nixplay account. To get a free Nixplay account, simply head to https://www.nixplay.com and register. Once your frame is connected you will be directed to the main menu of the screen. You now need to add photos so you can choose a display option.
By using the mobile app or web app, you can get photos from your own files, Facebook, Instagram, Google, Dropbox or Flickr. To set mine up I sat at my computer and worked in each platform uploading the pictures I wanted into playlists I created in my Nixplay photo board. I also downloaded the app so I can instantly send a photo to my playlists right after taking the shot. You no longer need to wait until you get home and try to remember to upload your photos of the day. From the app you can grab a photo from your phone or tablet gallery instantly. Invite family and friends to send photos by sending them a pre-prompted email from within your Nixplay account.
Fix Your Settings
Once I had a playlist active I decided there were some settings I wanted to customizing from the default ones on the frame. Grab your frame’s remote and hit the setting button to access frame, network, display, time zone settings as well as look for current updates and some additional advanced settings. I corrected my time zone to the correct PST and decided I want the frame to auto shut-off after 10 minutes if we leave the room. The frame can sense movement so it has that option. I also chose to have photos fit-to-screen and I wanted the clock displayed so I checked that option.
Within settings you can also choose transition types, shuffle photos or continuous display and set the brightness among other small options.
I keep mine at my work desk and the boys love walking by and stopping to watch the current slide show. My frame pictured is the 10 inch frame in blue. Visit Nixplay Seed Frames to learn more.
The Purex® brand provided me with a sample of Purex® plus Clorox 2® detergent in exchange for a product review. However all the opinions expressed here are my own
At 7, the littlest things capture your attention and define so many little decisions in your day. This 7 year old has taken his favorite color and made it his life decision maker. Which PJ’s do you want? “Anything red”, he says. What juice pouch flavor do you want? “Anything red”‘ he says. Then there is the red sweatshirt of his. He wears it almost every day lately…because it’s red.
With a house of boys, I need a detergent that can fight anything. At bedtime, I scoop his red sweatshirt up to wash it. You’d think at least once it could stay clean enough to take a day off of washing, but that is not the case. Last week I could not identify this odd stain patch so I asked him about it and was told it was from recess…dirt wars, of course.
I was sent Purex Plus Clorox 2 and wondered if I can get a little bit of new from this well-worn red sweatshirt. I read the insert and it says it is formulated to remove the toughest stains. It is safe on colors and bleach free so it seems all clear for this red sweatshirt.
Before I sat down to write this post and take my photos I asked what the stains on the red sweatshirt are today. I was told syrup. Syrup? It was surprise lunch today at school, his favorite, of french toast and sausage patties. And he said they played tag and today was a rainy day.
I made sure my washing setting was on liquid and added the Purex plus Clorox 2. “Do you think it will take the spots out, Mom?” We shall see….
Speechless. Just a big photo of bright, like-new speechlessness. Even my son looked at it and his eyes opened wide then he turned at me with the biggest grin. “Magic” he whispered. My home will never be without this bottle of stain-fighting detergent. It truly brightened this boy’s favorite red sweatshirt and took out the stains without needing a prewash. As of March 2016 you have this Purex plus Clorox 2 on your retailers shelves.

There are many gross house cleaning situations we often find ourselves in and mildew from sitting water in showers and window sills is one of them! The mildew forms from condensation or residual water and cleaners that create mildew stains. Scoopy is a no-mess window and glass cleaning solution and I was sent one to try out for myself.
The box comes with the Scoopy blade, microfiber towel and handle reservoir. If you can see in the image below, I collected a good amount of residual water and cleaner just after one sliding glass door cleaning. If I did not have the reservoir, that moisture would drip to the bottom and be a mildew mess in the door jam. I have new, upgraded windows and sliders and I don’t want the ‘black mess’ visual.
You can find the Scoopy on Amazon and $2 of your purchase paid is donated to the ALA for healthy homes to all families. Another great benefit is that you now have water to reuse in plants if you are collecting condensation from shower stalls, sliders and windows. Simply spray your cleaners or make a water solution and apply to windows, attach the handle and swipe upwards with the blade. The moisture drips back down into the handle.
