I have written several posts lately as I continue my quest to NOT DIET my family, but simply remove as many chemicals and preservatives from our diet as possible. The hardest part has been taking everything I am learning which is simply educating myself on how to decifer the food label and ingredient list and finding products for children. When I was offered to try YummyEarth Lollipops and Gummy Bears I was so excited! These Organic, Allergen-free, chemical/fructose and artifical-free candies were a hit with my 4 year old. The lollipops alone have 22 Yummy flavors from Pomegranate Pucker, Wet Face Watermelon (my sons favorite), Too Berry Blueberry and the list goes on. The packages are resealable and have kid-friendly designs. My son instantly knew I had a product for him! As you can see from the photo below, I had to go searching for Watermelon when he heard that flavor was in the bag of Lollipops!. I was getting ready for dinner and said, “go ahead and open a Gummy Bear package and tell me how you like them, but don’t eat them all because dinner is ready”!. He came back in and said “Um..sorry Mommy, I accidently ate them all gone. It was an accident”! I guess he liked them enough to zone out and eat it all. They really are the perfect individual snack size pouches.
Started by 2 dads who wanted a treat they would serve their own kids. They wanted a product that would have the flavors and colors to attract children and give parents the satisfaction of “Candy” that is free of all the nastys in a standard treat. Here is the list of what their Gummy Bears, Lollipops, Sour Beans, Sour Worms, Vitamin C pops, Drops and fancy-wrapped Artisan Candies are:
Fructose/Corn Syrup Free
Tree Nut Free
Wow! What more can you ask for in CANDY! They are now available at Target. And I have been munching on these..they are great!

I Love the
Ecover Dishwasher Tablets Zero!
I was recently sent a box of Ecover Zero Dishwashing Tablets and I was impressed. I love clean..I figure if I am going to take my time to clean, I want what I am doing to result in effective and smell good cleaning. To me Clean is an odor. Call me odd, but when I try a new soap or laundry product I always sniff the end result. Not just because I love scents, but because I want that assurance the item is clean.
Ecover Zero Tablets worked wonderfully! My load came out so clean and there was absolutely ZERO residue on my glassware and dishes. And the dishes did SMELL Clean! With the pictures below, you can see what went into my load. Normally I wash the dishes entirely before putting into my dishwasher, but to really test this product, I put dirty dishes in. The glass bowl was leftover chili that was in my fridge for a while. The Green cup had leftover Smoothie residue from earlier in the day and bowl had dried cereal residue and utensils were used for my sons PB & Jelly sandwich and smoothie earlier in the day. The result…clean smelling, sparkling clean (and there really was a sparkle) and zero residue dishes!

Dave’s KILLER Bread
The Logo above explains just why I love Dave’s Killer Bread! I had recently been writing about my new Eating Plan my family has been on that is simply to cut preservatives and chemicals as much as possible. I had named their bread as one that is on my list of Breads that meet my new criteria in that post!
I am never without it and it didn’t take long for the entire family to become addicted. I have tried some very bland Natural breads and I am blown away at how such natural ingredients can come together so perfectly. I had done my research and learned a bit on how to read labels. As I had written in my Eating Plan post found here, I had learned that when it comes to bread there are ingredients that you may THINK are good for you, but they are actually one’s you want to avoid in terms of unnatural or changed. Here is a copy of that portion of my post:
Look for ‘Sprouted Wheat’ on the ingredients.
Avoid ingredients that read: Hydrogenized Oil, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Bleached/Unrefined Flour, Wheat
Gluten, Artificial flavor, Sweeteners like Sucrose/Aspartame
Good brands: Ezekiel Breads, Dave’s Killer Bread or Brown Rice Bread (look for brown Rice Flour as 1st ingredient)
I ran to the Grocery Store during that 1st NEW shopping trip. A trip to buy all the staples I needed to switch our eating plan..the right oils, sauces, staples, etc… and I scoured the bread aisle. I read bag after bag that listed ingredients I had learned to avoid until I picked up a bag of Dave’s Killer Bread. Below is what I read
WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR
ORGANIC CRACKED WHOLE WHEAT
I found this at WINCO and at about $4 a bag. More than your generic bag of chemical bread, but less than the fancy names that still list ingredients meant to avoid. My local QFC and Winco is now my 2 places to stop for our bread and my husband knows this also. The bag above is nearly empty and I bought it Tuesday. It is their LIGHT Grain Bread..only 65 Calories! It is moist, even the real grainy breads are very moist. The only thing I can say is if you are making toast, remember that you are toasting REAL ingredients so turn your toaster down a bit and it takes less time then standard bread or it ends up a bit tough. I never thought I should pay $4 for a loaf of bread and now I am happy and feel good to pay it. The price is very fair to the benefit and compared to other brands.
This is a review of my own pick. I was not affiliated in any way with Dave’s Crazy Bread when I wrote this post.
The 5 Love Languages of Children
by Gary Chapman & Ross Campbell
available at Amazon
I recently received this book: The 5 Love Languages of Children and found myself really tuning in on each of my boys and picking their style out from beginning to end of this book. Your Child’s Love Language is their unique ways that categorize their need for love into one of 5 “languages”:
- Physical Touch
- Words of Affirmation
- Quality Time
- Acts of Service
It is important to really understand what each language consists of in the context of child or teen love. Your child may lean towards one language, but is it their true nature or are they lacking from you in that area. The Love Language of your child is not so much what they “crave”, but what drives them. To know their Language will help guide their learning and relationships with their peers.
My Boys: Mr. Word’s of Affirmation (2 oldest) and Mr Quality Time (youngest)
Chapters’ 1-6 explain each individual Love Language. You will now know what each Love Language represents in their young and even into teen lives.
Chapter 7 is How To Discover Your Child’s Love Language. My favorite part of this chapter was it really helped identify which was each of my boys’ language. It gave me questions to ask and ideas to “test” them. I learned you CAN be fooled with the older boys. It is important to not clue them in to your searching of their langauge…they may misleed you as they hope to manipulate your desire to get what they want. Our children ARE naturally selfish and it would just a Teenager’s tendancy to misguide you.
Chapter 8 was how to best discipline each language for your child. My favorite sentence in this chapter was : “First, the Punishment must fit the crime because children are so ware of fairness.” That is so true and I do practice that with my boys. Fairness, to me is your common link between you and your child within an arguement.
Chapter 9 links Learning with their language. My favorite paragraph of this Chapter is on page 153. It states: “If you want your child to take responsibility and be highly motivated, you must realize that homework is your child’s responsibility, not your.” I blew this on my first son. Grades and homework was such a huge part of what I wanted that I pushed him right away from it becoming his responsibility. By son two, he just graduated 8th grade with a 3.4 and I hardly have to stress. My youngest is 4 and too young now, but our middle son is highly motivated. Homework is HIS to do. I react when I see him slipping, but now he reacts before I even do at times. I NEVER fix his problems. I teach and make him go back to try again. My first son would hand me his work and I’d bring it back when done..big OOPS!
Chapter 10 was the last relevant chapter for me and is about Anger and their language. What I learned in this Chapter was Seize the Moment. I am quick to react and punish. I am truely missing the boat in praising their ways of expressing anger, but to not condemn their wrong behavior. To take a moment to recognize a positive and to not react to “their” situation by condemning them and to guide their response to a more positive one for the next time is worth so much down the road.

Medleys Fruit Snacks
I recently received a package from Mott’s consisting of the 6 boxes of New Fruit Medleys pictured above. My son was in fruit snack heaven seeing all those boxes! What I love about these, besides the brand, is that these fruit snacks are made with REAL Fruit and Vegetable Juices as well as Natural Flavors & Colors. They are also Fat & Gluten Free. I wondered how my son would approve of these, after all they are not in Mario or Superman shapes. I let him dive in and he loved them. He has been dipping into all these boxes since. These are going to be great On-the-go snacks for summer car trips and camping trips we have planned. Fruit snack are always my favorite camping and road trip snack because they tolerate the heat pretty well and are not too messy. Most camping trips we take are with families who have small children and I know these Mott’s Fruit sack will be perfect to leave out and let the kids have at them!

I Didn’t Take My Own Advise!
In my Original post I had mentioned that if you deplete yourself of Fats/Sugars, you can lower your Blood Sugars too much and that tells your body to release Insulin. When your body releases insulin, it sends the message to your brain that you are hungry and you find yourself eating more which will NOT help the weigh loss plan at all!
I started over the weekend and was proud at what I was serving my family! Organic/Free Range Meats, fresh Veggies and fruits. Brown wheats. No preservatives AT ALL (except Birthday Pizza at my son’s party-I only took a sliver)! I packed my lunch for work: Pure Peanut Butter, Fresh Jam on Crazy Mikes Grain Bread, carrots, yogurt w/ Fresh Granola. Today, I started feeling ravenous. I am not starving myself!? I eat great meals..and 3 of them (I am notorious for not eating breakfast and now I do). I keep some trail mix and carrots at work for snacking and I found myself wanting to snack and could not figure out why..heck! I ate breakfast after all! Then it hit me….SUGARS! As I think back, as healthy as all the foods are we are eating..with natural ingredients I am void of sugar! My Blood Sugar is low and I am starved (so I think). Mind over matter was not helping..I wanted lunch by 11am.
So 1 cup of Coffee w/ Bailey’s Caramel Creamer w/ lunch and that was it! I was good until dinner.
Remember to watch Sugar intake and do not skip that ingredient!!
