Our children always end the school day by arriving off the bus ravenous! I have 2 boys at home this school year ages 6 and 16. The teenager comes home ready for a meal just about and on days he has to race home then head back out to his job, he needs quick and fulfilling after school snacks. I tend to keep easy-to-make options such as Bagel Bites or Delimex Taquitos in the freezer for him. He tends to arrive home, turn on the oven-run upstairs to change-I will here the oven temp buzz and throw them in and by the time they are done-he is landing downstairs ready for work and able to chow down before heading out the door.
My 6 year old acts like he has not eaten in a week when he gets home. It will be interesting to see how this year goes. Last year he was half day Kindergarten and he would never eat at snack time because he lost minutes of playtime. As I was alerted he is not snaking I had to start hearty breakfasts for him. Now he is entering first grade and will be taking a lunch to school. I have to hope he eats well enough and I suppose even if he does, he will still arrive home starved! Because he is not too far behind his brother, the youngest gets the leftovers. I make 1 after school snack and there is enough to feed 2 children. These snacks re-heat well and still taste great.
What do you get when you combine Bagel Bites, celery, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a 6 year old? You get Bagel Bite weapons! He started sticking the thin slices of celery I cut for him into his bagel bites to make swords, sais and numchucks. When a child is away from his action figures for a few hours, they get to join him for snack time! It’s a bond that I cannot break apart.
Furthermore, when the 6 year old wants to help in the kitchen, we give them the easy tasks. He is perfectly capable of mixing salad items in a bowl and then topping our Southwest Salads with some Delimex Taquitos I cut into pieces. This is our favorite dish on Taco Tuesday nights! A little Southwest sauce and sour cream and this makes a great side dish to tacos, quick snack
or #AfterSchoolSnack ! You can even buy the pre-mix salad kits that come with the Southwest blend and snack-making is even easier! I am one of those odd parents who can say that 3 out of my 3 boys would be perfectly happy being served a hearty salad at snack time. Weird? I know! I totally take advantage of that!
What makes these after school snacks even more appealing is that they are priced low at your local Walmart! As I do my bi-weekly school lunch shopping I stock up on these after-school snacks. Without these options they come home and raid the school lunch bins and then I run out of lunch items sooner. I cannot afford to double up on lunch snacks because they eat them all day long! Having options like Delimex and Bagel Bites available at Walmart saves me time and money!
