Treating Headaches: 10 Natural Remedies

Headaches are a nuisance and I know that is an understatement. I get cluster headaches at the start of my menstrual cycle every month. We have tried switching birth controls with lower estrogen and have tried more hydrarion. Nothing seems to keep them from coming back each month. I am sort of just used to it by now. Plus some remedies I have tried seem to help a bit.  For you, it may just be that you are tired, hungry or might not have enough caffeine. But headaches are never fun and can put a damper on anyone’s day. It doesn’t matter if it is a tension headache, migraine or a cluster headache, they hurt and you’ll want the pain to go away.

Treating Headaches: 10 Natural Remedies

There are many over the counter drugs you can pick to help alleviate the pain. Sometimes the headaches aren’t too bad and you know that a natural option is best – while other times the pain pill isn’t working, so you’ve got to try something else.
Below are ten natural remedies that work.

Water

Most often than not, when your head starts to throb, you are just dehydrated. This can be especially true if it has been hot outside and you haven’t been drinking enough water. Or if you’ve had a busy day.  When you feel a headache starting, instead of popping a couple of painkillers, drink a glass or two of water first and see if that works.

Ginger

Ginger is an excellent home remedy for headaches. This root crop reduces the inflammation of blood vessels in the head, which in turn relieves pain and tension. There are a couple of ways you can use ginger to treat a headache, drinking ginger juice or making ginger tea helps. You can even apply ginger powder diluted in water on the forehead.

Cayenne

Cayenne contains capsaicin. This unfamiliar substance halts the body’s pain perception. In other words, a little bit of capsaicin decreases the level of pain. Take 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne powder, 4 ounces of water and a couple of cotton swabs. Combine the dry ingredient with the wet and soak the swab. Apply the cotton swab in each nostril.

Mint Juice

This is more than just a refreshing way to cool off, mint juice is also an alternative to over the counter pain medicine. Mint contains menthol and menthone which have been proven to be effective in treating headaches. Applying mint juice extracted from mint leaves on the forehead can help a throbbing head.

Almonds

Like cayenne, almonds contain a substance called salicin. Salicin is a natural component of over the counter pain killers. Eat a few almonds when you feel your temples starting to hurt. Fair warning, it can go either way. There are people who are sensitive to almonds, so obviously this would not work and should be avoided for those people.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is often used for massage therapy because of its calming effects. However, like mint, peppermint also contains menthol which helps unclog blood vessels. If you have peppermint oil at home, all you need do is massage a few drops on your forehead or temples.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV is a natural remedy for quite a few issues. With that said, it is also an effective remedy for headaches. To use ACV as a headache buster, all you need is 1/4 cup of ACV, 3 cups of boiling water and 1 cup of cool drinking water. Pour the apple cider vinegar onto a bowl then fill the bowl with the boiling water. With a towel over your head, trap the steam and inhale.

Basil

Basil on food, especially on Italian dishes, tastes fantastic. But who knew this herb is also a headache remedy? Basil is particularly effective for tension pain since it is a muscle relaxant. You can make tea out of basil leaves or you can chew basil leaves for maximum effect.

Hot or Cold Compress

Headaches are tricky – it’s difficult to identify what causes them and how to make them stop without taking a few pain meds. But an option would be to alternate cold compress and hot compress and see what works.

Rest

Day to day life is tiring. Tasks at work and chores at home sometimes take a toll on your body. Headaches are common when you have strained your eyes from being on the computer too much or when you have been awake for extended periods. Take a break and rest. The headache is a sign your body needs to slow down.

Using natural remedies for headaches can work just as well as pain pills, but the trick is to find what works for you. If you suffer from major migraines these might not work, but you’ll never know unless you try. Usually these are triggered by certain foods or situations.

If you suffer from headaches every once in awhile, these are great alternatives to using ibuprofen or another over-the-counter medicine.

Is Your Sunscreen Safe and Effective? #GiveChemicalsTheBird – GIVEAWAY

Thank you Goddess Garden for partnering with Parenting Healthy to sponsor this post

Before you shop for this years sunscreens and browse the never ending selections on store shelves, let’s work together to #GiveChemicalsTheBird. What do I mean by that? Try making a safer sunscreen choice by buying mineral-based sunscreens. Why? They are effective and do not contain chemicals your skin must absorb for it to be effective.

Your skin is your largest organ of your body. More and more it is becoming highly recommended that we consider the creams, soaps and lotions we use on ours and our children’s skin. Goddess Garden sunscreen varieties do not contain the PABA, parabens, phthalates, BPA, Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Petroleum or toxic chemicals that most brands may contain and absorb through all of the skin layers. Check the labels!

[bctt tweet=”Let’s work together to #GiveChemicalsTheBird this summer. Start here: ” username=”3sonshavei”]

Let’s break this infographic down a bit. Look at your sunscreens in your home right now…go ahead…then come back to this. Do you see the ingredient, Oxybenzone? This chemical is well-known in sunscreens and absorbs through your skin layers and will enter your blood stream. This chemical is in the same class as BPA, only stronger. Yikes!

Do you see Parabens? These are in many sunscreens, bath products and beauty brands. It is a preservative and is genuinely linked to cancer and add in the sun UVB rays to get damaged DNA and an increase in skin aging. Moving down the ingredient list, do you see Phthalates? These and your hormones DO NOT get along. Guess where you won’t find these ingredients? In mineral sunscreens like Goddess Garden. There are so many topics to educate you on ingredients and facts on their blog.

What is Goddess Garden?

Goddess Garden was born from a Mom with a daughter allergic to most synthetic ingredients who needed a safe product in the sun. Most natural sunscreens were like paste and left you feeling greasy so she worked hard to create a safe, organic sunscreen that goes on and blends in well. I can tell you my son always reaches for this brand and I have tried others. He loves how easy it blends. Then she grew to other skincare products, listening to customers suggestions and you can find lip balms, aromatherapy and more that are natural, safe and effective. Visit Goddess Garden to see them all! And don’t forget to #GiveChemicalsTheBird this summer.

Find the closest Goddess Garden retailer to you.

The Giveaway

1 lucky reader will win a 3.4oz Facial tube, 6oz Kids Tube, and a 0.6oz Kids Sport sunscreen stick from Goddess Garden. Ends 6/7 and open to US. Good luck-enter below.

All-Natural Cures for 5 Common Kid Ailments

Parents have a lot to deal with when it comes to handling common kid ailments. And without a knowledge of all-natural cures that are proven to work, we turn to prescription medication as a crutch for small aches and pains. It is important to consult your doctor if a cold lingers, or for larger medical issues. However, nature has provided many remedies that have been used effectively for centuries. Brushing up on a couple all-natural cures will give you alternatives to the dangers of synthetic prescription drugs.

  1. Coughs and colds.

Go to any park with children climbing on play sets and you get a breeding ground for the common cold. Having a remedy on hand to ease recovery from a cold is a life-saver for any parent. What natural remedy to choose? Mayo Clinic suggests honey to help relieve congestion as well as soothe a sore throat. (Only use as a cough remedy for children over the age of 1.) To administer a honey remedy, mix 2 tsp of honey with 1 tsp of lemon or grated ginger into hot water. Allow to dissolve and cool before serving.

Gargling with salt water can also soothe a sore throat. Add a tsp of salt to a cup of water and let it dissolve before gargling. Some children are unable to gargle effectively and find the experience unpleasant, so you may prefer honey over this option.

  1. Earaches.

Many ear infections do not need prescription drugs for effective treatment. As the pain of an earache can often be diminished through a warm and cold compress. Place a cold compress on the ear for 10 minutes and then alternate to a warm one. Or, if you prefer, just one type of compress can also help reduce pain.

For a herbal remedy, consider using tea tree oil as an ear drop to ease the pain of an earache. Tea tree oil is a well-recognized, effective anti-inflammatory and antibacterial solution.

  1. Stomachaches.

The complaint is a common one in any household with children. Stomachache causes can range from acid reflux, to indigestion, to gas, or constipation. If you have already ruled out possible food allergies and have consulted with your doctor, try adding ginger to your family’s diet. Ginger has been a long-time cure for nausea and is well-known to aid digestion. Another option is CBD oil. Recent studies have been looking at CBD as a treatment for various gastrointestinal issues. You can find CBD oil in the Portland area through sites like this one, or do a search for dispensaries in your city.

  1. Toothaches.

If you child has a toothache, the common cause is childhood cavities and decay, which should be looked at by a dentist. However, if the dentist appointment is a day away, you still have some long hours to get through until your child can find relief. There are a couple of solutions you can try. Have your child rinse their mouth out with salt water (1 tsp of salt in 1 cup of water). They should swish the solution in their mouth for approx. 30 seconds. Salt is able to help bring down swelling, and thus alleviate some pain. Peppermint tea has some numbing properties. Steep 1 tsp of peppermint leaves in a cup of hot water and for half an hour. After which, have your child swish the tea around in their mouth for 30 seconds or so.

  1. Headaches.

Headaches in kids can be a symptom of stress, hunger, a need for a healthier lifestyle, or other triggers. So while it is good to think of cures, you need to also be thinking of what might be causing the headache. If it is a sinus headache, with pain around the cheeks and eyes, lavender aromatherapy can help to relieve the pain. Diffuse lavender oil in the room, or have your child sniff the oil at intervals.

Safe Cleaning For Home and Family with Dapple

Thank you Dapple for partnering with us on this feature. Opinions are my own

Safe Cleaning For Home and Family

When you become first time parents you quickly realize how much cleaning is involved with having a baby. Then they become toddlers and the cleaning of nursery, high chairs and bottles give way to sippy cups, fingers and plastic plates. When using soaps with synthetic ingredients you get residue and lingering odors after some time, especially in the cracks of those bottles and sippy cup parts. Dapple has your plant-based and baby-friendly solution for a better cleaner.

When it comes to standing at the kitchen sink which you will do a lot…like all of the time, you need a bottle and dish soap that is safe and effective. Having it smell good is a bonus too. Dapple has some new Bottle & Dish soaps. They now have a foam soap option and new scents for their dish soap such as grapefruit, tangerine and pomegranate. I use it to even scrub my pots and pans and it is effective on any mess. I love how sudsy it gets while cleaning.

Dapple wipes

Even at 8, you are still dealing with sticky fingers like my son after his popsicles. At the older age you tend to not have to be on top of them at all times. However, there are times like I have where they are playing away on the computer keyboard and you look down at the sticky mess of fingers they have! Time to break out the Dapple Pure N’ Clean Everything Wipes.

Have you ever had baby in one hand and tried stuffing a washer and dryer and pour laundry soap to add? How does that work out for you? With Dapple, you grab a strip. That’s it. They have baby-safe laundry detergent strips you toss in the wash and it is hypoallergenic and free of the SLS, Parabens and formaldehyde you can find in some commercial products. You’ll only pay under .50 cents a load too!

Dapple was created by Mom’s who wanted the best for their own babies while scrubbing bottles and cups and maintaining the rest of the household chores. Like us, they are not fans of odor and residues left behind on our everyday baby products. I found Dapple on Amazon and you can see their locator on the website for other retailers to buy from.
