Holiday treats! So delicious, fun to make and full of tradition. They also are packed with calories! Although we cannot totally escape from the loaded sugar and calorie-packed holiday treats, we can cut wherever possible. Use a natural sweetener instead of sugar, applesauce instead of butter and carton products? Yes! I said ‘carton products’. To be carton smart requires knowing what is in the foods we eat and we should not be afraid of some carton foods when we cannot use the real ingredient or have the tools and time necessary to puree a pumpkin ourselves when we can use a ready-made puree, right? Just know what is inside of those cartons and cans. Make sure it is there to house real ingredients, not a ton of chemicals and artificial ingredients. Pacific’s Pumpkin Pie Recipe
1 Carton of Pacific Natural Foods Pumpkin Puree
5oz(2/3c) evaporated milk
3/4 c sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp cloves
1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell
Beat eggs in a large bowl-mix in sugar and all spices, salt. Gently stir in pumpkin puree and evaporated milk. Pour into pie crust. Bake 425F 15 min. Reduce heat and bake 50-60 minutes.
